The Office of the National Cyber Director held a meeting at the White House on Tuesday, October 25 along with electric vehicle industry executives discussing EV cybersecurity and its role in the Biden administration’s climate goals.

Industry participants included auto, component, and EV charging infrastructure manufacturers. They shared their organizations’ views on current cybersecurity “practices, gaps and recommendations for improvement” within the EV ecosystem.

Government officials “noted that building an electric vehicle ecosystem that is secure and resilient is crucial to achieving some of the administration’s climate policy objectives, which include increasing the production of electric vehicles to 50 percent by 2030”.

It’s critical that both the public and private sectors are aware of the improvements needed for current cybersecurity standards of electric vehicles. Autonomous vehicles, also known as self-driving cars, which are connected to the internet to operate, can also pose potential cybersecurity risks.

It’s important that these risks are continuously monitored and that conversations between government officials and private sector leaders who want to strengthen the cybersecurity infrastructure continue. As the EV and EVSE ecosystem continues to accelerate, cybersecurity must be monitored from the public and private sectors to achieve climate policy goals in a safe and secure way.
