Drivers can operate the charger via their smartphone and even leave the car while the robot does the charging. This [new EV innovation](https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2022/07/20/ford-trials-robot-charging-station-designed-to-give-disabled-dri.html) is meant to help disabled drivers so that they can stay in their vehicles while charging. “Ford is testing the robot charging station as part of a research project to develop hands-free charging solutions for electric vehicles and fully automatic charging for autonomous vehicles.” The robot charging station was custom built by Dortmund University in Germany and after initial lab testing, is now being introduced in real-life situations. The charging arm extends from the station towards the inlet with assistance from a small camera, then retracts after the charge. Ford wants the station to be deployed at disabled parking spaces, in parking lots and private homes. Looking ahead, it could be used for efficient fleet charging as well. Ford will be conducting a follow-up project with charging network provider Ionity. Charging can pose a great challenge for disabled drivers and people with reduced mobility.
