On Thursday, June 9, the Biden administration proposed new standards for its plan to build a national network of 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. The administration’s goal is to continue transitioning the country’s transportation sector to electric-powered vehicles and accelerate clean energy growth.
As states install fast-charging EV stations every 50 miles across the country, these standards set a framework to follow. The program is part of the bipartisan infrastructure legislation which includes $7.5 billion to build a national network of EV charging stations – $5 billion of this funding is allocated to states to fund EV chargers over the next five years.

The standards are meant to develop a unified network of chargers which includes similar payment systems, pricing information and charging speeds, and a requirement for stations to have a minimum number and type of chargers.
