Biden Administration Announces New Standards for EV Charging Station Network

EV Charging StationOn Thursday, June 9, the Biden administration proposed new standards for its plan to build a national network of 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. The administration’s goal is to continue transitioning the country’s transportation sector to electric-powered vehicles and accelerate clean energy growth.

As states install fast-charging EV stations every 50 miles across the country, these standards set a framework to follow. The program is part of the bipartisan infrastructure legislation which includes $7.5 billion to build a national network of EV charging stations – $5 billion of this funding is allocated to states to fund EV chargers over the next five years.

“Biden officials said the proposal on minimum standards will help establish the groundwork for states to build charging station projects that are accessible to all drivers regardless of the location, EV brand or charging company.”

The standards are meant to develop a unified network of chargers which includes similar payment systems, pricing information and charging speeds, and a requirement for stations to have a minimum number and type of chargers. Real time information on station pricing and location will also be available so that EV drivers can better plan their trips.

Buttigieg noted the administration’s attention to not just the quantity of chargers, but the quality. This improved focus on EV station quality is a productive step forward, demonstrating that the administration understands the need for functioning chargers and the concern over range anxiety. With the rapid growth of EVs on the road, what we need is a robust charging network – this means making accessibility a priority. The new standards will help ensure a seamless charging station system that creates easy and equal charger access for drivers no matter what kind of EV they drive, where they’re charging, or how they’re paying.
