Electric vehicle charging station infrastructure in Massachusetts is becoming more accessible through the available state and utility incentives and rebate programs encouraging the adoption of EVs.

Massachusetts is providing more than $13 million in grants to install over 300 electric vehicle fast-charging stations at 150 locations around the state. The grants have been awarded to 54 government and private entities under the Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Incentive Program.

The grants cover 100% of the eligible cost to acquire and install publicly accessible EV charging stations at government-owned properties and 80% at all other locations, up to $50,000 per charging port.

Governor Charlie Baker commented that installing the charging stations is “a step towards the increased deployment of these clean vehicles, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and public health, enhance energy diversity and promote economic growth.”

Sona has compiled a detailed list and breakdown of the Massachusetts utility and state programs to help guide you understand the EV charging station incentives available to your property.

Utility Programs

Eversource – Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Installation Incentive

Eversource’s Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program covers 100% of the infrastructure and implementation costs for commercial and multifamily properties to install approved Level 2 or DC EVSE. Eversource is fully subscribed for the current amount of funding but is still accepting Make Ready applications for their Commercial and Industrial electric customers. Phase 2 of the EV program is expecting approval in Summer 2022 and will likely include new EV charging station incentives in addition to the Make Ready offering. Learn more here.

National Grid – Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program

National Grid’s Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program offers its non-residential customers installation and funding support of up to 100% of the electric infrastructure costs for approved Level 2 and DCFCs. They also offer rebates for certain charging station equipment installations. More info can be found here.

MassEVIP

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (MassEVIP) offers assistance with the cost of purchasing and installing EV charging infrastructure. Recently, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has added their new DC Fast Charging Station Program and enhanced their three rolling grant programs: Workplace & Fleets Charging, Multi-Unit Dwelling & Educational Campus Charging and Public Access Charging Programs.

MassEVIP Workplace & Fleet Charging Incentives

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) offers incentives to fleet operators and employers for the installation of Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging stations. To be eligible, applicants must have 15 or more employees in a non-residential place of business. MassDEP funds up to 60% of installation costs up to a maximum of $50,000 per street address.

MassEVIP Multi-Unit Dwelling & Educational Campus Charging Incentives

Under this program, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) offers incentives for property owners or managers to install Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging stations. To be eligible, multi-unit dwellings must have five or more residential units and educational campuses must have at least 15 students on site. MassDEP funds up to 60% of installation costs up to a maximum of $50,000 per street address.

MassEVIP Public Access Electric Vehicle Charging Incentives

This grant program through MassDEP provides incentives to property owners and managers with publicly accessible parking to acquire and install Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging stations. For government owned locations, MassDEP funds up to 100% of the hardware and installation costs for a maximum of $50,000 per street address. For all other locations, up to 80% of hardware and installation costs are funded with a maximum of $50,000 per street address.
