Just in time for summer, state parks across the country are introducing EV charging stations, increasing tourism opportunities, and improving charging accessibility for electric vehicle drivers. Recently, Michigan and Oregon have announced plans for installation. This reflects the efforts at the national level to install EV charging stations at scenic, cultural, and civic destinations.
Installation of new charging stations along Lake Michigan will begin this summer. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is working to create a network of chargers encircling the lake and plans to add 30 EV stations along the Lake Michigan shore.
Ron Olson, chief of the Michigan Department of National Resources’ Parks and Recreation Division comments that “the enhancement will no doubt increase the number of visitors at these parks, while providing convenience and significantly increasing the range for EV motorists.”
In Oregon, Level 2 EV chargers will be installed in selected state parks as part of a pilot project through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the nonprofit Adopt a Charger (AAC). Interestingly, this agreement allows fundraising and donations to cover the charger installation and gives donors the option to sponsor the electricity costs for up to three years. AAC is working with electric vehicle manufacturer and automotive technology company Rivian to donate the installation design, construction cost and EV chargers.
With more spots to charge up at popular travel destinations, Michigan and Oregon are supporting the national efforts to incorporate EVs into our everyday lives. EV drivers are more likely to road trip to areas where they know they can charge their vehicles, making charger accessibility in scenic locations an important development. The national parks also increase their visitors and encourage zero-emission tourism and sustainable travel. As the implementation of EV chargers at state parks and other tourism locations continues, it will be interesting to note what types of chargers are implemented. Will these locations quickly outgrow Level 2 chargers and need to install DCFC?
